In the following period ( 1974-1984 ), the structure of import began to change, the rolled products of special steel qualities gaining the important share, those of commercial quality being already produced by the domestic industry. The volume of the export registered a spectacular growth, which determined again, in 1984, the change of the company name into METALEXPORTIMPORT.

In the well-known world market situation, the activity of METALEXPORTIMPORT was centred mainly on the export which registered an unprecedented increase. The highest level was reached in the period 1988 –1989, when the export amounted to a total value of about 2 billion USD / year, representing about 3 million tons of rolled steel and 120 thousand tons of aluminium ingots and rolled aluminium.

After 1990, the traditional import of rolled steel and tubes of special steel as well as the import of non-ferrous materials have decreased considerably, some of them disappearing completely, as a result of the specific conditions occurred in the Romanian economy (the reduction of the industrial activity, the shortage of financial funds, the reorganization and restructuring of the industry, the appearance of a great number of importing companies, etc. )

Under these circumstances, METALEXPORTIMPORT has re-oriented its activity towards the import of raw materials and other goods necessary for the steel industry, during 1990 –1997 importing large quantities of coking coal, blast furnace coke, iron ore, ferro-alloys, refractory products, natural gas, electric power, spare parts, etc.

Reverting to the importance of the road covered so far, it is worth mentioning that the company is now undergoing a wide process of restructuring. Since 1993, important steps were made towards privatization. All those who are now under the banner of the company METALEXPORTIMPORT enjoy today the happiness of its 55-th anniversary. At the same time, they do not lose sight of the present-day realities which oblige them, by means of the exigencies of the market economy, to live on their own feet, to make their own way, to choose from thousands of solutions, the best one.
